Tuscon Bicycle Classic
The 19th annual Tucson Bicycle Classic came to the King brothers' backyard of Tucson, Arizona March 5-7, 2004. We all knew good things were in store for Louis Garneau as the first day of the three day stage race fell on Robbie's 24th birthday. After a brief birthday bash, Friday's racing got underway with a short, twisting, rolling 3.8 mile TT. Ted powered his way to an impressive 3rd place in the Men's II, while Robbie nabbed 17th in the same category, and Ian scored a 28th place in the Men's I. Saturday brought a four lap, 84 mile road race that features the relatively short, but grueling Gates Pass climb (12%) before a fast descent to the start finish. All three Louis Garneau racers impressively finished in the top ten; Robbie scored 2nd place, while Ian sprinted into 4th place, and Ted rolled in for a 9th place finish. In GC, Ian moved up seven places, Robbie jumped ten spots landing in 7th place, while Ted moved up one spot into second place. The final stage was a circuit race with 50 miles of racing for category I's and 45 miles for the II field. Louis Garneau saw the full spectrum of good and bad results and luck for the day when Robbie flatted half way through the race. Rather than a standard quick wheel change, the wheel attendant first gave Robbie a Campy wheel which was not compatible with his bike, then tried again with a 650cc wheel, only to finally correct himself on the third try, at that point putting Robbie well out of contention (he very nobly finished the race). Ian had a spite of bad luck also finishing in 47th place, giving him a 30th place finish in GC. However, the grand result from the weekend came with 30 seconds to go in the entire three day event when Ted surprised everyone more than 500 meters from the finish when he went on a heroic sprint that gave him a comfortable margin of victory for the day as well as the time bonus that pushed him into first place for the full weekend.
